TikTok Brings Voice Notes and Media Sharing to DMs

So, here’s some cool news from TikTok. The app is trying to make its private chats more lively. From now on, you can send voice notes (yes, up to one full minute) and also share up to nine photos or videos in one go. This works both in one-to-one chats and in groups. Basically, TikTok is catching up with apps like WhatsApp and Instagram that already had these features.

Talking Instead of Typing

You know how sometimes typing feels boring or takes too much time? Now, with voice notes, you can just hold the mic button near the text box and record what you want to say. Release it, and it goes. If you don’t like it, swipe to delete. Want to keep recording without holding the button? Just swipe up to lock it. The nice part is, even after sending, you still have three minutes to delete it if you change your mind. Handy, right?

Photos and Videos Made Easy

Along with audio, TikTok now lets you drop in up to nine images or clips in a single message. You can choose from your phone’s gallery or even click/record directly inside TikTok before sending. Whether it’s friends or groups, sharing moments has become smoother.

Safety Still Matters

Of course, TikTok knows messaging features can be misused. That’s why they have rules in place. Kids under 16 can’t use DMs at all. Those aged 16 to 18 get auto-protection—images with adult content are blocked. And even adults can switch on filters to avoid unwanted stuff. Also, nobody can just send you photos or videos as their very first message, which reduces random spam.

Bigger Plans for Messaging

Over the past year, TikTok has been slowly growing its chat options—group chats, brand channels, even DMs during live streams. Now with voice notes and richer media sharing, the platform wants to show that it’s not just about scrolling videos. It’s becoming more like a social hub, where you can actually connect, talk, and share privately.

When Will You Get It?

The update is rolling out in the coming weeks to all accounts that are allowed to use DMs. So, if you don’t see it yet, it should reach you soon.

TikTok’s move is clear—they want people to spend more time inside the app, not just watching videos but also chatting and connecting with friends. With these small but meaningful upgrades, TikTok is stepping closer to becoming a full-on social platform.
